Bellmore is a charming bedroom community that is reviving its rich history. Thanks to a community backed revitalization program, Bellmore is reclaiming the past glory and charm of the downtown business district with an old-time village look including vintage colors, period awnings and hand-carved gold leaf signs. Bellmore is a very close-knit, family oriented community. Homes in the area range from the mid-$200,000s to over a million dollars. Bellmore has a population of approximately 16,000 and the area features a wide variety of housing types, mainly single-family homes, ranging in style from Cape Cods to extravagant waterfront mansions. The area was first settled by the Dutch in the late 1600s. Originally called Little Neck, it was renamed New Bridge in 1818 when a bridge was erected on South Road, now Merrick Road. It was renamed Bellmore some 50 years later. Today, the town holds an annual old-fashioned gathering to celebrate its history. For more than a decade, thousands have turned out for the annual September Family Street Fair that includes events for the entire family.
